How the online flashlight works
On phones where the browser allows it, the page opens the back camera and asks it to switch its flash on, the same light used for photos. The camera picture itself isn't shown or saved. Turning the torch off closes the camera again.
Screen light fills your whole screen with a bright colour instead. It's gentler than the torch, handy as a reading light or for video calls in a dark room, and works on any phone, tablet or computer. Red light helps keep your eyes adjusted to the dark.
Torch not working?
- iPhone and iPad: Safari doesn't let websites control the torch. Use Control Centre, or Screen light here.
- Android: use Chrome, and make sure no other app (such as the camera) is using the camera.
- Computers: webcams don't have a flash. Use Screen light.
Frequently asked questions
Does the torch drain the battery?
A little, like the phone's own torch. The camera stays open while the torch is on, so switch it off when you're done.
How do I leave Screen light?
Tap anywhere on the screen, or press Esc.
