Using a computer?

Most laptops and desktops don't have motion sensors, so this test is meant for phones and tablets. Some 2-in-1 laptops do have them.

How the gyroscope test works

Your browser reads three kinds of motion data and this page shows them live:

The bubble works like a spirit level: it turns green when the device is level to within one degree.

Readings look wrong?

  1. Turn off auto-rotate for a moment, as screen rotation can make the axes look swapped.
  2. Calibrate the compass by moving the phone in a figure-of-eight a few times.
  3. Stay away from magnets, such as magnetic cases and car mounts, which upset the compass.
  4. Restart the device if values freeze or never change.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my iPhone ask for permission?

Safari on iPhone and iPad asks before letting websites read motion sensors. Tap Allow; if you tapped Don't Allow, close the tab and open the page again.

The compass value is empty.

Some devices and browsers only provide tilt, not a compass heading. That's normal.
