Pen Pressure Test

Draw with your stylus or tablet pen to check pressure sensitivity, tilt and the eraser.

  1. Draw a line, pressing lightly at first and then harder.
  2. The line should get thicker as you press harder.
  3. Tilt the pen and flip it to the eraser to check those too.

Mouse and finger

A mouse has no pressure sensor, so browsers report a fixed half-pressure. Fingers usually report the same, apart from a few phones. Use a pen for a real test.

How the pen pressure test works

Your browser receives the pen's position many times a second, along with how hard it's pressed (0 to 100%) and, on pens that support it, the angle it's held at and how it's twisted. The line is drawn thicker as pressure rises, so a working pen gives smooth, tapering strokes. The bar under the drawing area shows live pressure.

Pressure not working?

  1. Install or update the tablet driver from the maker's website, then restart the browser.
  2. On Windows, check Windows Ink. Some tablet drivers have a "Use Windows Ink" option that browsers need for pressure.
  3. Charge or replace the pen battery if your pen uses one.
  4. Try another browser. Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari all support pen pressure, but driver support varies.

Frequently asked questions

Why is tilt always zero?

Many pens, including most phone styluses, don't sense tilt. Others only report it through certain drivers.

My eraser draws instead of erasing.

The browser may not see it as an eraser. Check the tablet driver's button settings. When the eraser is detected, the eraser row above says so.
